Assessment at Ryedale
We constantly look for proof of learning. We judiciously select appropriate forms of assessment to gauge student understanding and to adapt teaching to make it more effective.
This is done using 2 types of assessment.
Summative assessment:
These are used to provide information to teachers as to what students know and don’t know. This helps with the tracking and reporting of student progress along with adaptive future planning. At Ryedale our middle leaders have mapped out 15 key summative assessments (called Orange Sticker Assessments) that provide information of key knowledge and skills across the subject curriculum.
Formative assessment:
Arguably, the more important form of assessment is formative. These provide both students and teachers with feedback informing how successful the learning process has been. This form of assessment should be frequently used in classrooms to find out what students do and don’t understand about key knowledge and skills on a variety of scales (during a lesson / across a topic / between topics). Formative assessment can come in many forms: Questioning, low stakes tests including quizzes and exam style questions, and other forms of deliberate practice. Effective use of formative assessment is key to effective feedback and will help students to improve and teachers to support with their development.
